Reigning European champions Portugal kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a surprise defeat to Switzerland, though Fernando Santos’ side have roared back with three straight wins, scoring 16 goals and conceding just one in games against Andorra, the Faroe Islands, and Latvia. However, they remain three points adrift of the Swiss pacesetters and will look to maintain their pressure with a win over Hungary on Saturday.

However, don’t be surprised if Hungary poses problems for Portugal. Back-to-back wins have seen them stay within two points of the Portuguese in the group, and their run to the knockout stages of the Euros last summer suggests they should not be underestimated. These sides actually met at that tournament, with Portugal thrice equalising in a spectacular 3-3 draw. Let’s hope for similar entertainment in Lisbon.

Three big things to know

1. Hungary need no introduction to the man who’ll be terrorising their defence on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace when they met at the Euros and provided the assist for the other. No one has bettered his tally of seven goals in World Cup qualifying so far.

2. Hungary last visited Portugal in a qualifier in advance of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. On that occasion, they posed no problems for their hosts, who ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.

3. In the starting lineup for Hungary that day was attacking midfielder Zoltán Gera, who made his debut appearance for the national team 15 years ago. Incredibly, he’s still being called up at 37 years old, and he could collect his 97th cap for Hungary on Saturday.
