The latest slate of South American World Cup qualifiers reach a climax with Uruguay’s trip to Peru on Tuesday. It’s a massive game for both sides, and a bigger one than Uruguay would’ve liked. Their qualification campaign had been going swimmingly until back-to-back defeats to Chile and Brazil, and they now find themselves a precarious three points above the fifth place playoff spot. They’ll look to nip their poor form swiftly in the bud in Lima.

As for the hosts, they find themselves struggling down in eighth place in the group, five points adrift of fifth. They’ve done enough so far to ensure that their hopes of qualifying are still alive, albeit hanging by a thread. They’ll realistically need at least three wins from their last five games to stand any chance of qualifying, and home soil means they’ll consider this match a serious opportunity.

Three big things to know

1. Peru have reason to be concerned by their poor home record. They’ve won only two of their six home qualifiers, with only Venezuela having tasted success in front of their own fans on fewer occasions.

2. Uruguay have won each of their last four matches against Peru, including their last visit to Lima in a qualifier ahead of the 2014 World Cup. Not since 2009 have Peru managed to beat La Celeste.

3. There’s no doubting who’ll pose the greatest threat to Peru’s defence in this match: Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani was on the scoresheet in his side’s 4-1 defeat to Brazil last week, netting his ninth goal of the qualifying campaign so far. That’s a bigger tally than anyone else.
