Mexico vs. Trinidad & Tobago 2017: Final score 1-0, El Tri in control of World Cup qualifying

An away win has Mexico on top of the Hexagonal in CONCACAF and looking unlikely to relinquish first place.

Mexico appears to be in for a stress-free World Cup qualifying cycle after their two March fixtures. El Tri got all three points away to Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday, recording a 1-0 win.

This result follows up a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica at Estadio Azteca four days ago. Mexico now has 10 points and is three points clear at the top of the Hexagonal.

Hector Moreno got Mexico off to a strong start, forcing a save of his header following a corner in the eighth minute. But T&T was the much better team for the rest of the first half and was unlucky not to go ahead. Joevin Jones had a goal disallowed for offside in the 32nd minute, and it appeared the referee’s assistant made the wrong call:

But Mexico sorted themselves out at halftime and quickly took over. Hector Herrera hit the crossbar in the 47th minute, and his team didn’t have to wait much longer to take the lead. Diego Reyes was the man who fired Mexico in front, hitting a powerful header through the hands of Jan Michael Williams in the 58th minute:

El Tri didn’t park the bus after this — they actually made two more attacking substitutions — but there wasn’t a ton of action after the goal. Herrera and Jesus Molina controlled midfield well, while Mexico’s back line held strong to keep the clean sheet.
