The start of the 2017 MLS season has been just as chaotic as it could have been, and with the last few games of the first week set to start, Orlando City SC and New York City FC look set to try to steal the show.

Orlando are opening up their brand-new soccer-specific stadium, a gorgeous venue that looks well suited to the team that hosts it: light, shiny, and full of promise. They’re young and hungry and led by the right kinds of veterans — Kaka may not be quite as quick as he once was, but he’s got the kind of savvy and leadership that Cyle Larin and the rest of the young core can use to be at their best. He’s also still got all the pure talent that made him one of the best in the world, and that’s worth a lot for a team like Orlando even if he’s not quite at his peak any more.

New York City FC have lofty goals of their own, feeling deeply disappointed in the way their playoff run ended a year ago, getting absolutely blasted by Toronto despite entering the tie as favorites. They restructured their team heavily in the offseason as a result, and now it’s time to give their changes a stern test — how NYCFC perform in this match will go a long ways towards seeing where they stand compared to a year ago.
