Bayern Munich suffered a shock defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie at the Allianz Arena a week ago, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting a brace after Arturo Vidal had given the Bavarians an early lead. Sure, 2-1 is certainly a salvageable scoreline, but Carlo Ancelotti’s men will still need to turn in a brilliant performance at the Bernabéu on Tuesday if they’re to make it into the final four.
Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich: Time, TV schedule for Champions League
Bayern are hoping to stage a comeback in Madrid.
Only twice in the history of the Champions League has a first-leg home defeat been overturned, with Bayern having been on the receiving end of the most recent comeback win. They won 1-0 away to Inter Milan in 2011, only to lose the return leg 3-2. It’s certainly indicative of the magnitude of their task.
Real Madrid will certainly be without centre-backs Raphaël Varane and Pepe, with Nacho set to continue partnering Sergio Ramos at the heart of the defence. Bayern Munich’s biggest injury miss is Mats Hummels; like the suspended Javi Martínez, he’ll be watching from home. Robert Lewandowski missed the first leg with a shoulder injury, though is expected to return in time to feature here.
