Real Madrid stand atop La Liga with a two point lead and a game in hand, giving them a fairly commanding position — but one that they know can disappear in an instant if they slip up at all with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid snapping at their heels. That means that even if Deportivo Alavés are a team they should beat easily, they can’t afford to get distracted and look past them at all, because that would be courting disaster.

Helping Alavés’ cause is that they’re coming off two straight big wins over Malaga and Real Sociedad, and have won three out of their last five. They’ve risen to tenth place in La Liga, a strong position and one that their fans are proud of. They’ll be eager to see how well they stack up with a power like Real Madrid, though that’s going to be a tough task given the strong form that their foes have been in themselves.

Real Madrid will be missing just one player, with Casemiro sitting out with a suspension. Deportivo Alavés, however, have a few important injury concerns. Midfielder Nenad Krsticic and defender Carlos Vigaray are both major question marks, and forward Ruben Sobrino is still out with a hamstring injury. Alavés already needed everything to go right to upset Real Madrid, and having key players unavailable or playing at less than full strength won’t help that one bit.
