What’s worse than a relegation-threatened team facing Bayern Munich? A relegation team facing Bayern Munich after they’ve been knocked out of the Champions League under controversial circumstances, leaving them angry and eager to prove a point. That’s the situation that Mainz 05 find themselves in, and that’s not going to be pretty for the struggling side to deal with.

Interestingly, Bayern have only won one of their last five matches, their worst run of form all season. Mainz, though, are in even worse form — they’ve won only one of seven, losing by a single goal in five straight matches and drawing the other. Their defense has been decidedly unimpressive all season long, and their attack hasn’t been any better, leading to long swoons in form like the one they find themselves in now.

Bayern Munich are dealing with a major injury blow, after Manuel Neuer suffered a foot injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season. Sven Ulreich is a good backup goalkeeper, but to go from probably the best keeper in the world to a good backup is a bitter blow. Defensive duo Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez are both expected to miss out with minor injuries that Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t want to risk. Mainz are without just one key player — defender Gaetan Bussman — and will hopefully be at full readiness otherwise, which they’ll need to be at against an angry Bayern team.
