Thomas Tuchel has left Borussia Dortmund after just two years in charge at he Westfalenstadion. Though the side finished third in this year’s Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal cup, they were never really in the title race, and rifts between the head coach and with the Dortmund hierarchy have proved irreconcilable.

Though he was initially a refreshing presence for a Dortmund squad that had imploded in Jürgen Klopp’s last season, this season Tuchel has clashed with the club’s bosses over the sale of key players and the identity of their replacements. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Ilkay Gündoğan, and Mats Hummels all left last summer, and the latter in particular has not been adequately replaced.

This means that one of Europe’s most highly rated coaches becomes available early in the summertime. Presumably, Tuchel won’t be short of offers from both within the Bundesliga and elsewhere, and his name has been continually linked with Arsenal by the British press. Should he stay in Germany, Bayer Leverkusen seems a likely destination.

As for Dortmund, the most heavily linked replacement is Lucien Favre, who has impressed at OGC Nice over the last season. Last time Favre worked in the Bundesliga, he took Borussia Mönchengladbach into the Champions League. Dortmund will be hoping he can turn them back into title challengers.
