As the La Liga season reaches its climax, Barcelona and Real Madrid are still neck-and-neck. The Catalan side head into their encounter with Villarreal as provisional league leaders on tiebreakers alone, though Madrid still have a game in hand. That means Barça really need all three points if they’re to keep the pressure on their El Clásico rivals heading into the final couple of rounds.

Villarreal will certainly prove tough opponents for Barça, with Fran Escribá‘s men flying high in the league table. They’ve won all but one of their last six matches, surging up into fifth place. They’re not yet completely out of contention for Champions League qualification, and will be hoping to maintain their momentum on their trip to Catalonia. It’s sure to be an entertaining fixture.

Barcelona will be without fullback Aleix Vidal and central midfielder Rafinha, who are out for the foreseeable future. They’re waiting on the fitness of defender Jérémy Mathieu, who is close to a return from injury. Veteran Andrés Iniesta should be fit to start in midfield. Villarreal will certainly be without goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo, defender Víctor Ruiz, and attacker Denis Cheryshev, who are all currently on the treatment table. Defender Álvaro González and central midfielder Bruno Soriano are both doubtful.
