A lot of the focus on international football goes to Spain or Germany or Brazil or Argentina, but none of those teams is in the Confederations Cup this year. Instead, two of the teams that are quietly among the best sides in the international game are squaring off against each other, with Portugal and Mexico kicking off their 2017 Confederations Cup runs in a match that could ultimately decide the winner of Group A.

The defending UEFA European Championship winners, Portugal, boast one of the best players in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo — but more than that, their supporting cast has gotten steadily better to the point where they’re unquestionably one of the most talented international sides in Europe.

Portugal have had a strong showing in World Cup qualification so far, taking 15 points in six group matches and putting themselves in a strong position to qualify for the tournament next summer in Russia. A strong Confederations Cup run would only help strengthen that momentum and could turn Portugal into a truly intimidating side for any nation to face.

Mexico are running rampant in North America, as the reigning CONCACAF Gold Cup winners trounced their archrivals, the United States, in a playoff match to qualify for this tournament and then started a truly dominant run in the final round of World Cup qualification that has seen them already put one hand on a spot in the World Cup just over halfway through the round. Now they’re looking to prove themselves against the elite of the elite in international football, and a big win here to knock Portugal down a peg or two would go a long way toward doing just that.
