The reigning World Cup winners, Germany, kick off their Confederations Cup campaign in Sochi in Monday, when they take on Australia. Joachim Löw’s side head in as one of the favourites to win the tournament overall, though it’s worth noting that he’s chosen to give some of Germany’s most well-known players the summer off. The likes of Manuel Neuer, Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos, Mesut Özil, and Thomas Müller have all been left at home.

Reigning world champions Germany kick off their Confederations Cup campaign against Australia.

Australia — who qualified for the Confederations Cup by virtue of winning the AFC Asian Cup a couple of years ago — will certainly consider themselves to have a chance of causing an upset in this match. However, coach Ange Postecoglou was dealt a blow last week when it was announced that team captain and midfield enforcer Mile Jedinak would miss the tournament with a groin injury.
These sides last met in a friendly in Kaiserslautern back in 2015; on that occasion Lukas Podolski rescued a late draw for Germany after Jedinak had fired Australia 2-1 in front. Let’s hope for a similarly entertaining encounter on Monday.
