Detroit’s Comerica Park plays host to its first ever soccer match on Wednesday, as two of Europe’s top sides visit for the annual preseason tournament, the International Champions Cup. The match will see France’s domestic runners-up, Paris Saint-Germain, go head-to-head with Italy’s domestic runners-up, AS Roma. Supporters of both clubs will be looking for positive signs ahead of the new season.

PSG take on Roma in their International Champions Cup opener.

Roma fans will be especially intrigued, as this game offers them their first chance to see how they may set up under new coach Eusebio Di Francesco. He moved back to Roma — where he played over a century of times as a player — from Sassuolo in the summer, and there’s reason for optimism at the Olimpico. PSG, meanwhile, have elected to stick with Unai Emery, despite a disappointing first season under the Spaniard.
Fun Paris Saint-Germain fringe player to watch: Gonçalo Guedes
PSG reportedly saw off interest from Manchester United to sign young winger Gonçalo Guedes from Benfica back in January, and the 20-year-old has already made his first few appearances in the first team. He’ll be hoping this season can be a breakthrough one, and it could all start in preseason.
Fun AS Roma fringe player to watch: Lorenzo Pellegrini
The 21-year-old midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini was born in Rome and spent his entire youth career at Roma, only to be sold after making a solitary professional appearance. However, two thoroughly impressive seasons under Di Francesco at Sassuolo have seen the Giallorossi exercise their €10 million buyback clause, and the one-time Italian international looks ready to compete for a starting spot in Serie A this season.
Compared to other friendlies, is this worth my time?
The arrival of Di Francesco certainly adds some intrigue, and both sides should give game time to a smattering of young talents, but the lack of big summer signings on show — PSG’s new right-back Dani Alves is unquestionably the most attention-grabbing — means this only gets a 5/10.
