Coming into the Confederations Cup, there were two teams that a lot of people liked, but didn’t necessarily see making the final. Of course, fate is a funny thing, and those two teams are the ones in the final, as Germany and Chile square off to see who wins the preview tournament for the 2018 World Cup.

Of course, a year ago this may not have seemed so strange. Chile were coming off a dominant performance in winning their second straight Copa America, and Germany had impressed in the European Championship coming off their World Cup triumph in 2014. They were legitimately two of the best national teams around, the kinds of teams that seem to find more glory than they know what to do with.

But Chile have struggled in World Cup qualifying in the last year, getting decent results but looking almost nothing like the tournament-dominating side they were. Germany’s results went a little flat as well, leading Joachim Low to leave his best players at home to rest while he brought a team of fringe first-teamers and reserves to test his depth. They were still two of the better teams in the Confederations Cup, make no mistake, but they just didn’t seem to have that extra bit of edge that a tournament like this needs.

Despite that, though, both Chile and Germany went undefeated in their group — including holding each other to a 1-1 draw — and then both went on to beat the presumptive tournament favorites in Portugal and Mexico in the semifinals in convincing displays. Chile beat Portugal at their own game in forcing the match to a penalty shootout that they won 3-0, and Germany straight-up punched Mexico in the mouth en route to a huge 4-1 win.

Chile and Germany have definitely earned their way to this final, no matter how big a surprise it might seem. Now it’s time for them to prove which team is better right now, and both of these teams are going to fight very, very hard to do just that.
