The United States men’s national team has a new co-leading scorer. Clint Dempsey found the back of the net in the 83rd minute of the USMNT’s Gold Cup match against Costa Rica on Saturday to tie Landon Donovan at the top of the all-time goals list.
Clint Dempsey scores in USA vs. Costa Rica to match all-time USMNT goals record
Deuce scored his 57th international goal, equalling Landon Donovan.

Here it is, off a brilliant free kick.
This was Dempsey’s 57th goal in a USMNT shirt, scored in 18 fewer matches than Donovan needed. Donovan also scored 15 penalties for the national team, while only six of Dempsey’s international goals have come from the spot.
Dempsey found the back of the net for the first time in 2005, during his sixth national team appearance, a friendly against England. He quickly established himself as a first-choice player and went on to score at the 2006 World Cup.
With his memorable opening goal against Ghana at the 2014 World Cup, Dempsey became the first American to score in three consecutive editions of the World Cup. He’s also found the back of the net in four editions of the Gold Cup, in a Confederations Cup, and in last summer’s Copa America. He also has an impressive 18 goals in World Cup qualifying.
And it looks like Dempsey will have every chance to grow his legend. His recent goal-scoring prowess for the national team has made it impossible for Bruce Arena to keep him off the squad. Dempsey’s going to keep getting games throughout 2017, and if the USMNT qualifies for the World Cup, he might head to Russia at the age of 35 as well.
