Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur got off to a good start in their International Champions Cup campaign on Saturday, seeing off Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 in Florida. They’ll be hoping to keep building momentum ahead of the new Premier League season when they go head-to-head with AS Roma in New Jersey on Tuesday.

Roma weren’t quite as successful in their encounter with PSG last week, eventually being beaten on penalties after a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes. The Italian outfit are still getting used to life under new coach Eusebio Di Francesco, and it’s understandable if they’re not yet quite up to speed.

Tottenham Hotspur fringe player to watch: Kyle Walker-Peters

The sale of Spurs’ starting right-back Kyle Walker to Manchester City could be partly offset by the emergence of one of their academy stars — coincidentally named Kyle Walker-Peters. The 20-year-old, who has spent his entire career at the club, started in the win over PSG, and reports suggest that Pochettino is ready to promote him to the first team. A bright future surely awaits.

AS Roma summer signing to watch: Maxime Gonalons

French midfielder Maxime Gonalons left boyhood club Lyon after the best part of two decades earlier in the summer, signing a four-year contract with Roma. The 28-year-old anchorman will be hoping to establish himself as the key defensive player in Di Francesco’s midfield trio, and is almost certain to be given some game time against Spurs.

Compared to other friendlies, is this worth my time?

There may be no headline-grabbing summer signings on show, but this still has the makings of an intriguing contest. Spurs are looking like one of Europe’s top teams at the moment, and Roma are enjoying a fresh start under Di Francesco. It could be worth a watch. 6/10.
