Tuesday in the International Champions Cup brings us an interesting step into the recent past in football, with a rematch of the 2012 Champions League final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich taking place in Singapore. While most of the players on the pitch and the managers on the touchline have changed in the last five years, the quality and hunger of both teams is little different, promising what should be a fun match for the friendly tournament.

It’s a rematch of the 2012 Champions League final in Singapore.

Since then, Bayern have settled back into being the dominant side in Germany, having just finished their fifth straight title-winning season in the Bundesliga. Chelsea’s record has been a little bit more up-and-down, with two English Premier League titles in the past three seasons, but the campaign in between going so poorly that they fired legendary manager Jose Mourinho and at one point were fighting against relegation. They have much higher goals this season, though, and another repeat of that 2012 final coming in 2018 would make both clubs very happy.
Fun Chelsea player to watch: Antonio Rüdiger
As a center back, Rüdiger isn’t typically the kind of player you’d want to focus on in a friendly like this, but under the circumstances there’s plenty of reason to want to keep a close eye on the big German while he’s on the pitch. Chelsea made a significant £30 million investment in him this summer to fill the John Terry-sized hole in their defense, and the expectations for him will be very high as a result. Playing against a team with as good a front line as Bayern will be a good early test for Rüdiger, so Chelsea fans will be eager to see how he performs here.
Fun Bayern Munich player to watch: Kingsley Coman
With Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry expected to slide into more secondary roles in the Bayern team this season, the German juggernaut will need Coman to take a step up in his performance on the pitch. Fortunately, the 21-year-old French winger has looked ready for such a challenge, and he should get plenty of time on the pitch on Tuesday to prove it. He’s got buckets of talent on the pitch, but consistently putting that talent to good use has been a problem from time to time, but a good showing here could be a major confidence boost for Coman at the perfect time just before the season starts.
Compared to other friendlies, is this worth my time?
These were two of the best teams in Europe last season, but various circumstances have forced both Chelsea and Bayern into some pretty serious overhauls this summer. Watching new talent gel together can be kind of dull from time to time, but when it’s this kind of talent it can also be a whole lot of fun, or at least pretty fascinating. 6/10.
