Earlier this summer, Mexico had the privilege of participating in the FIFA Confederations Cup. That means that they’ve taken a B-team to Gold Cup, but their second unit won’t be under any less pressure than their starters would be. El Tri is still expected to make the final, and they start their Gold Cup campaign on Sunday against El Salvador.
Mexico vs. El Salvador, 2017 Gold Cup: Start time, TV schedule, and livestream
El Tri is hoping their B-team can win a title and prepare themselves for bigger things.

Mexico will be going through the entirety of the tournament without their manager, Juan Carlos Osorio. He was sent off during the Confederations Cup semifinal and later suspended for six matches due to inappropriate behavior toward officials. His assistant manager, Luis Pompilio Paez, will lead Mexico in this tournament.
Three previously uncapped players have made this El Tri squad, while 14 players have single-digit caps. Veteran goalkeeper José de Jesús Corona will take the captain’s armband, while Hugo Ayala and Jesús Molina add depth to an otherwise young squad. Monterrey center-back César Montes and Houston Dynamo forward “Cubo” Erick Torres will be the emerging stars to watch at this tournament.
El Salvador is still trying to rebuild after 14 players were handed lifetime bans for match fixing in 2013. However, Rodolfo Zelaya has returned from a one-year ban, while Darwin Cerén provides a threat down the wing. There will also be a lot of eyes on Roberto Domínguez and Bryan Tamacas, young defenders who could earn MLS interest if they can slow down Mexico’s attack.
