The Italian domestic season gets underway on Sunday — if not quite in anger, then at least a state of mild discontent. The Supercoppa may not be the most prestigious silverware on offer, but both Juventus and Lazio will want to gain momentum ahead of their opening league fixtures next weekend. It should be an intriguing encounter.

The Italian domestic season’s traditional curtain-raiser takes place at the Olimpico on Sunday.

Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri will be expected to hand debuts to a string of summer signings, among them Federico Bernardeschi, Mattia De Sciglio and Douglas Costa. Lazio haven’t been able to splash the cash quite as freely in the transfer market, though the arrivals of Lucas Leiva and Felipe Caicedo have added bags of experience to an otherwise relatively young side.
Lazio — who qualified for the Supercoppa by virtue of making the final of last year’s Coppa Italia, where they were eventually defeated by Juve — have enjoyed a particularly impressive preseason, seeing off both Bayer Leverkusen and Málaga in their last couple of friendlies. Juve’s has been rather more of a mixed bag, with defeats to Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur combined with wins over PSG and AS Roma.
