The Premier League wants to close its transfer window early. It’s a good-intentioned, but dumb idea.

Fans and coaches will be happy, but does it put the league at a competitive disadvantage?

No team is happy when it gets pressured into a transfer after the season has already started. Philippe Coutinho, Alexis Sanchez and Virgil van Dijk could blow up their teams’ plans after the season has started by forcing moves. And some Premier League owners want to change this by moving up the transfer deadline.

A majority of Premier League club chairmen are reportedly in favor of moving the transfer deadline to a week before the start of the season. They’ll discuss this proposal during a meeting on September 7.

While this proposal would make a lot of sense in a world where the labor market was confined to one league, it’ll be difficult to implement in a global soccer marketplace. Nick Miller argues at the Guardian that this proposal could create unforseen problems, and Mark Ogden at ESPN FC says it only makes sense if other leagues follow suit.

Fans and coaches would be relieved with a global transfer system that requires business to be done before seasons start. But if the Premier League tries to be pioneers on this issue, the league might put itself at a competitive disadvantage.
