Nice should prove stern opponents for Napoli in the first leg of their Champions League playoff.

Finishing third in Serie A last season guaranteed that Napoli have to go through the tense Champions League playoff round if they’re to participate in Europe’s top club competition this season. The draw will have done little to settle their nerves, with Maurizio Sarri’s men having to go toe to toe with a Nice side that battled their way to an unlikely third in Ligue 1 last season. The first leg takes place at the Stadio San Paolo on Wednesday.

Napoli can, however, take heart from the team news. They’ve got a fully fit squad, with Nikola Maksimović and Adam Ounas both hoping to be handed their competitive debuts. Nice, by contrast, are without star man Mario Balotelli, and marquee summer signing Wesley Sneijder — they’re both currently out injured. Young midfielder Wylan Cyprien is a long-term absentee after suffering an ACL injury in March.

However, discount Nice at your peril. They’ve already seen off Ajax in this year’s Champions League qualifying rounds, and are sure to head into this encounter with plenty of confidence. If they make it to the Champions League proper, it will be their first appearance in the tournament since 1960, when they made it to the quarterfinals of the then-European Cup, before being beaten by Real Madrid. Coincidentally, the Spanish giants put an end to Napoli’s Champions League hopes at the same stage last season.
