The new Bundesliga season kicks off Friday, with reigning champions Bayern Munich playing host to Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena. The Bavarians head into the season hoping to win a sixth straight German top flight title, and few would bet against them achieving it. Leverkusen, in contrast, are hoping to better last season’s disappointing 12th-place finish under the stewardship of new coach Heiko Herrlich.

Bayern will be expecting to kick off their campaign with a win, though they’re without a string of familiar faces. Jérôme Boateng, Javi Martínez, Juan Bernat, Thiago Alcântara and marquee summer signing James Rodríguez are all sidelined through injury. However, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer should be available again after recovering from a broken foot.

Bayer Leverkusen are in a much more salubrious state as the season gets underway: Their only confirmed absentee is defender Tin Jedvaj, who suffered a fractured shin in pre-season. They’re hoping to beat Bayern at the Allianz Arena for the first time since 2012, when Sidney Sam downed Jupp Heynckes’ outfit with a last-gasp winner.
