Barcelona’s struggles in the summer transfer market have meant that Real Madrid head into the new Spanish domestic season in pole position. Zinedine Zidane’s side are hoping to win back-to-back league titles for the first time in a decade, and kick off their campaign away at Deportivo La Coruña on Sunday. Anything other than three points would come as a disappointment.

Deportivo disappointed last season, with coach Pepe Mel eventually steering them to a spot two places higher than the relegation zone. It was all rather too close for comfort, and they’ll be hoping for a much more successful campaign this time around. The impressive summer signings of Fabian Schär and Zakaria Bakkali augur well, but the proof of the pudding is, of course, in the eating.

Deportivo will be without Carles Gil, who is injured, and the suspended Emre Çolak. Loan signing Federico Valverde is also sidelined for the season opener, as Madrid are his parent club. Madrid themselves will have to do without the injured Jesús Vallejo, and, more importantly, Cristiano Ronaldo, who is serving the first game of a five-match ban.
