Bayern Munich will have to overcome Paris Saint-Germain if they’re to progress into the Champions League knockout stages as group winners. However, Carlo Ancelotti’s side — who have been beaten in the semifinals of this tournament three seasons running — will nevertheless be content with the outcome of Thursday’s draw, which saw Anderlecht and Celtic also placed in Group B.
Bayern Munich’s Champions League draw results: Bavarians drawn in Group B with Paris Saint-Germain
Bayern Munich have drawn Paris Saint-Germain, but have avoided a group of death.

Though Anderlecht and Celtic could play out an intriguing battle for third place, it will almost certainly be a straight fight between Bayern and PSG for top spot, and — at least in theory — an easier draw in the Champions League’s first knockout round. With both the Bavarians and their Parisian counterparts among the favorites to go on and lift the trophy, it’ll be fascinating to see who has the better of their early meetings.

Biggest challenger
There’s no point being clever here: There is only one team in this group capable of seriously challenging Bayern for first place, and that’s Paris Saint-Germain. The French side may have disappointed in Unai Emery’s debut season, but the Spanish coach — and his bosses — will certainly be expecting stronger performances this time around. Elimination before the semifinals could well result in his swift departure. No pressure, Unai.
There’s also the small fact that PSG broke the world transfer record in the summer, signing Barcelona’s Brazilian star Neymar for an eye-watering fee just shy of £200 million. He’s clearly going to be the greatest threat to Bayern’s defence in the group stage meetings, and will be looking to make an immediate impression at his new club. His arrival has undoubtedly dragged PSG up to elite level, and Bayern will offer the first real test of his relationship with strike partner Edinson Cavani.
Prediction
Bayern and PSG will progress, but it’s anyone’s guess in which order. Bayern have the stronger midfield and defense, and will fancy their chances of nabbing top spot. However, they were slow to get going last season, and PSG will be on hand to punish any early errors.
