The Hex round of World Cup qualification in CONCACAF has been a show of dominance from Mexico, with El Tri going undefeated so far as they blaze a path to Russia next summer. In fact, one more win and a little help elsewhere in the group can guarantee their place in the World Cup — but that will will be tricky to gain against a strong Panama side.

Mexico can secure World Cup qualification with a win over Panama.

In fact, Panama are one of just two teams to take points off Mexico in the Hex so far, and that’s something El Tri would like to avenge. They’re going to be out for blood, especially knowing that a win here and any dropped points from Honduras in their match earlier in the day against Trinidad and Tobago will mean that Mexico are guaranteed to advance, with no possibility of falling out of the top three no matter any other result.
Mexico could easily coast their way though the rest of the group, with safety already all but guaranteed anyways, but that won’t be good enough for El Tri. They’ll want to assert their dominance as thoroughly as possible, especially after their disappointing Gold Cup and Confederations Cup runs earlier this summer. They need to re-establish their form, and there’s no better way to do that than to win a major qualification like this.
