The Bundesliga has been a wild ride early in the season, with both Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 dropping early points in unexpected fashion early in the season before the two traditional powers in Germany meet in one of the more explosive Bundesliga rivalries.

While the rivalry between Schalke and Bayern has lacked some of its traditional fire in recent years, Schalke’s excellent form and much-improved squad will be eager to do battle against the league-dominating force that Bayern have become, especially with the Bavarians not looking quite as formidable as normal so far this season.

Both clubs have won three matches this season and lost one, with Schalke’s loss coming in a narrow defeat at the hands of shockingly white-hot and second-place Hannover 96. Bayern fell at the hands of a plucky Hannover side the weekend before a Champions League clash that had their focus, but they also have yet to look like they’ve gotten up to full speed yet this season. Of course, rivalry matches like this have a habit of waking the sleeping giant in Bayern, so we’ll have to see just which version of their team shows up in Gelsenkirchen.

Bayern Munich will be without Manuel Neuer after the venerable goalkeeper reinjured his left foot in training on Monday, the same injury that ended his season early last year and kept him out of the Confederations Cup for Germany. Bayern will also be without a pair of defenders in David Alaba and Juan Bernat, leaving their defense looking shaky ahead of this key match. Schalke are in relatively good health in comparison, with just a couple of reserve players in Donis Avdijaj and Michael Langer unavailable.
