USMNT vs. Honduras live blog and highlights
Follow along as the USMNT tries to regain control of its own destiny in World Cup qualifying.

Not a good performance for the Americans, but a good result. Thanks to Bobby Wood’s late goal, the USMNT will qualify directly for the World Cup if it wins its final two matches.
90’ — Red card! Henry Figueroa gets a second yellow card for arguing with the referee and will be suspended for Honduras’ next game.
85’ — GOAL! Honduras 1-1 USA.
Kellyn Acosta takes a powerful free kick that’s saved incredibly by Lopez, but his defens can’t clear. Jordan Morris knocks the ball down to substitute Bobby Wood, who smashes home the equalizer to put the USMNT back in control in the overall qualifying picture.
82’ — Honduras is going defensive to close the game. Johnny Palacios comes on for Anthony Lozano.
76’ — Everyone on both teams looks tired. Honduras has a ton of space to counter into during a four-on-two, but can’t execute quickly. Lozano kicks a weak shot into the arms of Guzan. Honduras really should have ended the game on that move.
And less than a minute later, Lozano misses just wide on another counter.
72’ — Lopez is playing on and looks just fine. The USMNT makes its final sub, with Bobby Wood replacing Darlington Nagbe.
70’ — Honduras goalkeeper Luis Lopez is hurt, and Los Catrachos are hoping they don’t have to burn their final sub on a keeper switch.
64’ — Honduras makes a change too, with Carlo Costly coming on for Alexander Lopez. Then Oscar Boniek Garcia replaces the goal-scorer Quioto.
62’ — Two changes for the Americans. Paul Arriola is on for DaMarcus Beasley and Geoff Cameron replaces Graham Zusi.
57’ — The USMNT earns a free kick but Clint Dempsey smashes it into the wall. Specifically, Quioto’s face, and he’s hurt.
52’ — Lozano forces Guzan into a save. Honduras still the more threatening of the two teams.
46’ — And we’re back. No changes for either team, curiously.
HALFTIME: Honduras 1-0 USA
That was very bad from the Americans, but they’re still only one goal away from retaining control of their own fate in World Cup qualifying. They’d really like a win here after losing on Friday, but a draw will do it.
45’ — Guzan makes an excellent save on a powerful free kick by Maynor Figueroa.
41’ — Best moment yet for the US. Pulisic goes on a long dribbling run, plays a give-and-go with Morris and is denied by Lopez from close range.
36’ — DaMarcus Beasley is booked for hauling down Elis from behind. The American fullbacks have looked badly overmatched by Honduras’ quick wingers.
30’ — Quioto crosses low and Elis just misses a finish. Honduras collects the ball, resets, and Quioto hits a follow-up shot just over the bar. USMNT getting overrun.
28’ — GOAL! Honduras 1-0 USA.
Really bad defending. Graham Zusi and Omar Gonzalez are badly caught out by a through ball. Gonzalez is in position to poke it away, but whiffs, and it falls to Romell Quioto. He finishes past Brad Guzan, who didn’t look ready to make a play either.
24’ — One of the goalkeepers is tested for the first time. Brad Guzan easily makes a save on an Alberth Elis shot.
22’ — The groundskeepers at Estadio Olimpico seem to have let the grass grow a bit longer than you’ll usually see in high level soccer. The players’ boots and the ball are sinking deep into the turf.
17’ — Jorge Claros earns a yellow card for a high boot. Dempsey making a lot of it though, doesn’t look like Claros actually caught him.
14’ — Darlington Nagbe beats two defenders and cuts back for Kellyn Acosta, who plays a good chip to the back post, but Clint Dempsey is just barely beaten to it by his defender. Promising early stuff from the Americans.
11’ — The referee is letting a lot go. It might take the use of a weapon to get sent off in this game.
3’ — Decent effort by Jordan Morris sails wide. Expect most of the Americans’ threatening moves to come from direct balls in his direction.
1’ — Kickoff! Local authorities in San Pedro Sula made it mandatory for employers to let people out of work early in time for this game, so the crowd is massive and loud. Huge home field advantage for Los Catrachos.
Clint Dempsey is not messing around.
This does not sound fun.
Thanks to a surprising home loss to Costa Rica, the United States men’s national team finds itself with its back against the wall on Tuesday. The Americans will retain control of their own World Cup qualification destiny with a draw or win in Honduras, but a loss would leave them needing help in upcoming rounds.
Honduras defeated Trinidad and Tobago in its last game, drawing Los Catrachos level with the United States on points in the Hex. However, the Americans have a big lead on goal differential, so a draw will keep them ahead of Honduras. The USMNT lost in Honduras during qualifying for the last World Cup, but won in San Pedro Sula two cycles ago.
Bruce Arena hinted before the match that he would pick mostly domestic players due to them being in mid-season form, and he’s stuck by that promise. He’s made seven changes, with six of the seven new players coming into the team playing in MLS. Another, Omar Gonzalez, started his season in Liga MX earlier than European-based players. Brad Guzan has replaced Tim Howard in goal, while Clint Dempsey will get a chance to break the USMNT goals record from the start.
This is a live blog, and will update constantly throughout the match.
