The winter break in Germany is over, and once again we find ourselves with Bayern Munich already threatening to pull away from the rest of the Bundesliga with the season just half over. They have an 11-point lead on the second-place team, and a 13-point lead over their opponents on Friday, a fourth-place Bayer Leverkusen side that’s hoping to shock the world.

Bayer Leverkusen are in an interesting position coming into this match, with a chance to rise to second place with a win here and a couple of friendly results elsewhere in the table. But a loss here could also see them fall quite a ways down the table, as they’re in a cluster of 10 teams separated by just seven points, stretching all the way down to 11-place Hannover 96. Leverkusen definitely don’t want to start falling to the wrong end of that crowd, and a shocking win over Bayern would not only help them start to gain separation from the pack, it would help them gain some much-needed momentum to keep pulling away.

But Bayern have won six competitive matches in a row, and 15 of their last 16. That’s a huge streak of success that’s propelled them to the top of the table and well outside of anyone’s ability to catch them. Barring a huge collapse in form -- which doesn’t seem likely with how Jupp Heynckes has been running the team since he took over the club earlier this season, which started that impressive run of form — Bayern are going to easily win the Bundesliga, and they’ll break a lot of hearts along the way. Leverkusen should be ready for that, because while dreaming of such upsets is one thing, actually achieving them is something else.
