This season was supposed to be the one where Southampton returned to competing for European places and Premier League solidarity, but instead the Saints find themselves sitting in the relegation zone as they enter this match against Tottenham Hotspur more than halfway through the season. With a match against their former and most successful manager, Mauricio Pochettino, the pressure is on Southampton to find a way to win an upset.

Southampton have won just one game since the end of November, and that one was against Championship side Fulham in the FA Cup. In fact, they lost to Tottenham less than a month ago in EPL action, a 5-2 thrashing at White Hart Lane where Southampton looked very much like a relegation-threatened side. Further dampening the Saints’ hopes in this match beyond their recent form is the fact that they’ve only beaten Spurs once in the last decade, and haven’t beat them at home since 2005.

Tottenham, in stark contrast, are rolling. They’ve lost just one game since the end of November, and that was to league-dominating Manchester City. Their fifth-place standing isn’t because of their recent form, but because of an injury-fueled swoon of form in October and November and the excellent form of the EPL’s top four squads. In fact, they’ve given up just one goal in the new year, scoring 10 goals in four matches in January so far.
