Real Madrid have been slowly, methodically putting together a semblance of good form again of late, shrugging off getting dumped out of the Copa del Rey early and refocusing their efforts on a climb back up the La Liga rankings. With a win over a struggling Real Sociedad side on Saturday, they can climb up another rung, taking third place back for themselves.

That’s obviously not where Madrid want to be, but it’s a step back in the right direction. There’s still a long ways to go — Madrid are well out of the title race, a full 19 points behind their arch-rivals Barcelona, and even 13 points behind local rivals Atletico Madrid, who sit a distant second place. But Real Madrid can start to establish themselves as the top of the heap among the five teams within eight points of third place, and can start to establish a degree of dominance once more instead of scrambling to earn a Champions League place.

Of course, all that depends on getting a win, and Real Sociedad won’t be eager to just hand over three points like that. That said, Sociedad have been in poor form, with eight losses and just two wins over their last eleven all-competitions matches dating back to late November. It’s been a tough road for the club, who started the season with four straight all-competitions wins before getting buzzsawed by Real Madrid in September. They’ve fallen all the way down to 14th place in La Liga, and while they’re not quite in the relegation race, they’re also not that far off it, sitting eight points above the drop zone. That’s not a comfortable place to be, but a win over Real Madrid here could help spark their form back in the right direction once more.
