Italian international defender Davide Astori was found dead in his hotel room on Sunday morning. He was 31 years old. Fiorentina confirmed their captain’s passing in a statement.

In English, it reads:

“Fiorentina are profoundly shaken and forced to announce that their captain Davide Astori has died, caught by sudden illness. For this terrible and delicate situation, and especially out of respect for his family, we appeal to the sensitivity of the media.”

A cause of death has not yet been determined.

Astori came from the AC Milan youth system and went on two loan spells before signing for Cagliari, where he spent most of his professional career. Astori also had a spell at Roma before joining Fiorentina, and won 14 caps for Italy in his career.

In the wake of this news, Serie A has announced that all of the fixtures scheduled for Sunday will be postponed. No makeup date has been set.
