The Yekaterinburg stadium at this year’s World Cup — which is hosting today’s game between Egypt and Uruguay — wasn’t big enough originally to satisfy FIFA’s requirement for the size of World Cup stadiums, so they just went and built a big stand outside the stadium, in what I can only imagine came out of some structural engineer’s ayahuasca dream.
World Cup stadium’s crazy outdoor bleachers make the game look like you’re at a movie theater
A very scary, vertiginous movie theater.

For months, this stadium has only existed in the collective imagination of most soccer fans who haven’t had the pleasure of visiting Yekaterinburg. But now we have seen it, and we have seen the point of view from fans in the stadium, and good lord does it look terrifying.
Vertiginous. Scary. Wild. Also look at the poor steward up there. What did he do to pull that assignment?
The funniest part about all this is that, because they’re outside the stadium, it looks like they’re watching the match on a giant movie screen, and the movie they’re watching has a really terrible camera angle of the game.
The weather right now in Yekaterinburg is 56 degrees with a light rain falling. That looks absolutely miserable up there. Good stuff.
