All the goals of World Cup Day 5, ranked

There were 7 goals across 3 games, but 1 of them stood out above the rest.

Through five complete days of World Cup play, there still hasn’t been a scoreless draw. Monday’s slate had a couple of very high-scoring games two, with a total of seven goals hitting the back of the net. But there was one that stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Here are all of Monday’s goals.

7. Andreas Granqvist’s penalty against South Korea

Well-taken, but it doesn’t quite stack up to the other one.

6. Ferjani Sassi’s penalty against England

This one beat the keeper even though Jordan Pickford guessed right. Perfectly placed.

5. Harry Kane’s opener against Tunisia

Kane’s goals were both from rebounds off corners, so we have to find some way to differentiate them. The first one lands here just because of the stakes.

4. Harry Kane’s winner

It’s not much different than the first goal, but it’s a stoppage time game-winner.

3. Romelu Lukaku’s second against Panama

Gorgeous counter-attack goal with a very impressive finish. On other days, it might have been the best goal. But Belgium had two more that were even better.

2. Romelu Lukaku’s first goal

Mainly for the assist by Kevin De Bruyne, which couldn’t have been prettier. Might be the best assist we see all tournament.

1. Dries Mertens’ absolutely stunning volley

Take a bow. When the best goal of the tournament is voted on three weeks from now, this one is definitely going to be in the running. You don’t see a shot hit with technique like that too often.
