Harry Kane and England steamroll Panama, 6-1

The Three Lions put in a spectacular performance on Sunday, with Harry Kane scoring a hat trick and taking over the lead in the golden boot race. He has five goals, one ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku. John Stones also scored a brace on the night, and now has more goals in the World Cup than Wayne Rooney.

Hilariously, this was the exact result that England needed to draw level with Belgium on every criteria — points, goal differential, goals for and goals against. If the two teams draw their final match, the winner of the group will be decided on the fair play table, which is who has fewer bookings. Either team can win the group with a victory.

Winning the group might not actually be advantageous. The runner-up will get dropped into a half of the bracket that looks like it’ll include Mexico and Croatia as group winners, while the group winner might end up in a quarterfinal against a Brazil vs. Germany winner.

There’s not really any consolation in a game where you get whooped this badly, but it’s wonderful that Panama legend Felipe Baloy got to score a goal in the World Cup. One of the nation’s best ever players, at at his peak, he was the best center back in North American club soccer. He’ll eventually remember this fondly.

He didn’t know anything about it, but Kane completed a hat trick with his last touch of the ball before he was subbed off for Jamie Vardy. A shot by Ruben Loftus-Cheek hit Kane’s heel and deflected in, giving England’s captain his fifth goal of the World Cup. He leads the golden boot race.

Not only is England scoring at will, but Panama has zero shots on target. Games don’t get any more one-sided than this.

Hilariously, it’s probably beneficial for England to stop here. The runner-up in Group G will have an easier path to the final than the winner, so the best case scenario for England is to stop scoring now, then draw Belgium and lose the group on goals scored. Not that you can ever tell your team to stop trying, that never ends well.

Wheeeeee look at this one-two between Lingard and Sterling, then the rocket finish. One of the best goals of the tournament for sure.

This isn’t going well for Panama. Roman Torres got whistled for bulldozing Lingard, and Kane made no mistake from the spot. Absolutely blasted into the top corner.

That didn’t take long. Once again, England has scored from a set piece, and it was a beauty. This one has all the makings of a designed play based on a weakness that Gareth Southgate’s staff saw in Panama, because John Stones couldn’t have been more open, and he executed the header perfectly.

England has made one change, forced due to injury. Ruben Loftus-Cheek has come into the team to replace Dele Alli, who picked up a knock in the first match. His injury isn’t expected to be a long-term one, but he wasn’t quite fit to play on Sunday.

England got its 2018 World Cup off to a great start in its opening match in Group G, dispatching of Tunisia with a stoppage time winner. The Three Lions are expecting an even better performance on Sunday, when they take on Panama in Nizhny Novograd. The game kicks off at 8 a.m. ET on FS1 and Telemundo. The Panamanians are coming off a heavy defeat to Belgium and need a draw to keep their World Cup going. Realistically, nothing less than a win will see Panama have a good chance to make the knockout stage. A draw will do England’s chances of advancing just fine, but their fans will be expecting a comfortable, multiple goal victory.
