Michigan Wolverines
In what was supposed to be a competitive game against the then No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers, the Wolverines ran away with an impressive 38-13 win. The statement win coupled with half of the nation’s top eight teams in the AP Top 25 Poll losing last week allowed Michigan to jump up six spots and right back into the College Football Playoff conversation.
Michigan ranks second in the nation in total defense allowing only 238 total yards per game and ninth in scoring defense allowing 15.4 points per game.
The Wolverines have struggled badly against their in-state rivals over the last decade. Michigan is 2-8 SU and 0-10 ATS in its last 10 games against the Spartans.
Michigan State Spartans
Michigan State entered its game against then No. 8 Penn State last Saturday unranked and with an underwhelming 3-2 SU and 1-4 ATS record on the season. But with a 25-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds to go in the game, the Spartans pulled off a stunning 21-17 road upset as 13.5-point underdogs over the Nittany Lions.
With that win, the Spartans improved to 15-11 SU and 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 games as a betting underdog.
Saturday’s total is set at 41.5 points. The OVER is 6-2 in Michigan State’s last eight games and 4-1 in Michigan’s last five according to the OddsShark College Football Database.
Since 2011, Mark Dantonio has led the Spartans to a 10-5 SU record against teams ranked in the Top 10 of the AP Top 25 Poll. One of those wins came last season when Michigan State defeated the No. 7 Wolverines 14-10 in Michigan as 12.5-point road underdogs.
The Wolverines have done well to recover from their season-opening loss, but the second half of the season with this game, Penn State and Ohio State will reveal just how good Jim Harbaugh’s group really is this year.
