Denver Broncos vs. Atlanta Falcons
When: Thursday, August 1, 8:00 p.m. ET
Where: Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, Canton, Ohio
Betting Line / Total: Denver -3 / 34 Points
Fading the Falcons has been one of the easiest preseason betting strategies of the last two seasons. Atlanta has scored an average of only 6.8 points per game over its last five preseason games. At least in 2017 some of the games were close; in 2018, the Falcons lost every preseason game by double-digits and were outscored 96 to 27 over that four-game stretch.
Head coach Dan Quinn has stated that he wants the Falcons to run the ball more in 2019, so don’t be surprised to see him get his backup running backs plenty of carries in this one.
Unsurprisingly, the Falcons are 0-5 SU and ATS in their last five games as an underdog in the preseason per the OddsShark NFL Database.
In stark contrast to the Falcons, Denver has been a consistently strong preseason team in recent years. The Broncos are 17-8 SU and 15-9-1 ATS over their last 25 preseason games, most recently going 6-2 SU and 5-2-1 ATS over their last eight preseason games since the start of the 2017 season.
This stretch of success lasted through both Gary Kubiak and Vance Joseph’s stints as head coach. Vic Fangio takes over the reigns this season.
Broncos vs. Falcons NFL Betting Total
Thursday night’s total is set at 34 points. The UNDER is 9-2 in Atlanta’s last 11 preseason games.
The Hall of Fame Game always serves as a reminder that NFL football is so close yet still so far away. There have been less than 40 points scored in seven of the last eight Hall of Fame Game contests as teams shake off the rust of a long offseason. On the bright side for fans, the games have been competitive in recent years with four of the last five Hall of Fame Game matchups being decided by four points or less.
