Australian Open 2011 Live Results: Wozniacki, Sharapova Among Early Winners In Womens Play

The 2011 Australian Open is underway and the first-day action in the Women’s Singles draw is complete.

Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki dusted off the rust in her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Argentina’s Gisela Dulko at Rod Laver Arena.

No. 14 Maria Sharapova won for the first time at Melbourne Park since her 2008 win, defeating Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1, 6-3 on center court.

Sixth-seeded Francesca Schiavone, the defending Aussie Open champ, got all she could handle from Spain’s Arantxa Parra Santonja in a 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Elsewhere, No. 20 Kaia Kanepi came back to bear Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3; 29th-ranked Dominika Cibulkova earned a win over Angelique Kerber 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4; Evgeniya Rodina bested Australian wild-card Olivia Rogowska 6-3, 6-1; Alberta Brianti topped Lucie Hradecka 6-4, 7-5; Monica Niculescu stopped Timea Bacsinszky 6-0, 6-3; and Julia Goerges beat Edina Gallovits-Hall, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
