Venus Williams’ Short Dress For The Australian Open: Yea Or Nay?

It is a truth universally acknowledged in professional tennis that in the first round of any major tournament, one must never fail to discuss What Venus Williams Is Wearing, and good thing, too, because her new getup for the 2011 Australian Open is a doozy:

As my own dear dad would say, “Where’s the rest of that outfit?” The knock on this one will be immediately apparent: That it’s barely there. That said, haters make way: This is one of Venus’ best looks in a long time.

The lines are clean and simple. The color is perfect for the season, sets off her skin tone nicely, and coordinates well with the courts at the Aussie Open. And as far as the palette goes, she’s in great company: The colors match up perfectly with Erin Andrews’ new Reebok ads. (The difference, of course, is pants.) It looks like workout clothes, not underwear, is not unnecessarily covered with feathers, does not light up, and frankly appears much more comfortable to move in than her ooh-la-la outfit at the last French Open. Also, she’s wearing shorts, and this isn’t Wimbledon; it’s not like she’s flashing her panties at the Queen. It’s midsummer in Australia, everybody. Live a little.
