Australian Open 2011 Tennis Results, Day 6: Rafael Nadal Triumphs Over Bernard Tomic, Flu

Scores and highlights from Day 6 of the Australian Open 2011. Here’s a look at the final scores from men’s and women’s singles.

  • No. 1 Rafael Nadal def. Bernard Tomic, 6-2 7-5 6-3. The top-ranked player in the world entered Saturday's match with lingering flu symptoms, and he received a strong challenge from the 18-year-old Tomic. Nadal found himself down 4-0 in the second set before rallying. After the match, Nadal said, "I am sweating more than usual. I am more tired than usual when I'm playing. I don't know what's going on. I'm doing all that I can."
  • No. 5 Andy Murray def. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-1 6-1 6-2. The top British men's player routed the Spaniard to reach the final sixteen, having dropped only four sets.
  • No. 3 Kim Clijsters def. Alize Cornet, 7-6 6-3. Cornet's ambitions of winning a match on her 21st birthday were dashed, but she made an admirable effort. Clijsters said, "It was tough. She's a tricky player. During the match I felt like I was playing two different persons. I had to constantly move my feet, and work harder."
  • No. 2 Vera Zvonareva def. Lucie Safarova, 6-3 7-6. Zvonareva, who is aiming to reach her third consecutive Grand Slam final, managed to outlast Safarova. An Aussie Open title could make her the new world No. 1.
