Australian Open 2011 Tennis Results, Day 12: Andy Murray Defeats David Ferrer, Advances To Finals
• No. 5 Andy Murray def. No. 7 David Ferrer, 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 7-6 (7-2).
What a fine lot of tension for a four-set match! Cue the droning about Britain’s decades-long drought with out a Grand Slam event winner, but Murray’s been here before: Last year, in fact, when he lost in the finals to Roger Federer.
Murray, of course, will take on No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the final, which Americans will see around 3:30 EST Sunday morning.
• In other action on Rod Laver arena, the top-seeded team of Argentina’s Gisela Dulko and Italy’s Flavia Pennetta won the women’s doubles title, besting No. 12 Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko 2-6 7-5 6-1. In the mixed doubles semifinals, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and her partner, Romania’s Horia Tecau, were defeated by Chan Yung-Jan of Taiwan and Paul Hanley of Australia. The Woodies also returned in the Legends Doubles series, defeating Henri Leconte and Patrick Rafter in straight sets.
