Australian Open 2011 Tennis Results, Day 12: Andy Murray Defeats David Ferrer, Advances To Finals

Scores and highlights from Day 12 of the Australian Open 2011. Are we about to witness the most likable set of finals matches in the Open era?

• No. 5 Andy Murray def. No. 7 David Ferrer, 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 7-6 (7-2).
What a fine lot of tension for a four-set match! Cue the droning about Britain’s decades-long drought with out a Grand Slam event winner, but Murray’s been here before: Last year, in fact, when he lost in the finals to Roger Federer.
Murray, of course, will take on No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the final, which Americans will see around 3:30 EST Sunday morning.
• In other action on Rod Laver arena, the top-seeded team of Argentina’s Gisela Dulko and Italy’s Flavia Pennetta won the women’s doubles title, besting No. 12 Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko 2-6 7-5 6-1. In the mixed doubles semifinals, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and her partner, Romania’s Horia Tecau, were defeated by Chan Yung-Jan of Taiwan and Paul Hanley of Australia. The Woodies also returned in the Legends Doubles series, defeating Henri Leconte and Patrick Rafter in straight sets.
