Marcos Baghdatis, the 2005 Swiss Indoor runner-up, opened the 2011 tournament with a three-set victory.

The Cyprian tennis player defeated eight-seeded Viktor Troicki on Monday 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2.

The two hour and 43 minute match saw 46 winners from Baghdatis’ racket, compared to Troicki’s 30 winners. Baghdatis also converted five of seven break points, slammed six aces and won 72 percent of the points off his first serve.

Troicki, who was a 2010 semifinalist, won 59 percent of his service points, with four aces and four double faults.

Baghdatis previously defeated Troicki in the Kuala Kumpur and Malaysian Open semifinals.

The match between American Donald Young and Russia’s Mikhail Kukushkin lasted just one hour and 27 minutes. Kukushkin defeated Young in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Kukushkin had 16 service winners to Young’s five. However, Young had 23 total winners, one more than his Russian opponent.
