2011 BNP Paribas Masters Reults: Mardy Fish Injuries Hamstring And Retires, But Not Before Qualifying For Barclays

With his BNP Parbias Masters match today, American Mardy Fish qualified for his first spot in the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour. (All Fish needed was Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic to lose in Paris, which he did in straight sets, 7-5, 6-5 to No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych.)

But when Fish reached the start of the third set, he could only make it three games before he retired.

A reoccuring hamstring injury forced Fish from his match against Juan Monaco, 1-6, 7-6, 1-2, and out of Paris.

“When the pain got worse I knew I had to stop with London, which is arguably the most important tournament of my career, coming up,” Fish said. “I’ll certainly play in London. There’s no doubt about that. Even if it’s torn I’m still going to try and play. But I’d like it to be at a level that I want to compete at.”

The 29-year-old American had a MRI last week and will have another on Friday.
