The 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Juan Monaco pushed Federer into the semifinals round of the BNP Paribas Masters tournament in Paris. The Swiss is only the seventh player to reach 800 wins, joining Jimmy Connors (1,242), Ivan Lendl (1,071), Guillermo Vilas (923), John McEnroe (875), Andre Agassi (870) and Stefan Edberg (806). From the Associated Press:
“I knew going in today that this could be something special, something I could remember,” the third-seeded Swiss said. “So it’s just another win, but it’s a special one nevertheless, because 800 is definitely a big number.”
Federer will play Tomas Berdych, who defeated Andy Murray in three sets on Thursday, in the semifinals.
As for World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, he withdrew before his quarterfinal match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga due to a nagging shoulder injury.
Now, Tsonga’s semifinal match will be against American John Isner, who defeated No. 4 seeded David Ferrer in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
