Rafael Nadal begins Spain’s quest for a third Davis Cup title in four years on Friday in a singles match for the final opener between Spain and Argentina. The world No. 2 will face Juan Monaco in Sevillla at the Olympic Stadium.

Seven years ago, when Nadal was only 18 years-old, he defeated Andy Roddick, America’s No. 1 player, on the same court to help Spain to the Davis Cup title in 2004.

From Reuters:

“The court is practically the same and it was the first great emotion I experienced as a professional,” Nadal was quoted as saying in an interview published in Thursday’s edition of sports daily Marca. “Beating Roddick was special not only because of the victory but for everything that match meant.”

As for Nadal’s last match, which was on Nov. 24, it was full of emotional upset. In the quarterfinal round of the ATP World Tour, Frenchman Jo Wilfried-Tsonga defeated his Spanish opponent, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3.

In Monaco’s last tournament, the Argentine singles player upset Spaniard David Ferrer to reach the finals of the Valencia Open but was unable to walk away with the tournament title.

In Davis Cup matches Nadal is 14-0 on clay.
