For the first time, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and World No. 2 Petra Kvitova were named the 2011 World Champions by the International Tennis Federation.

Left-handed Kvitova won her first title in at Wimbledon this year at the age of 21, also walked away with the year-end title at the WTA Championships in Istanbul. Kvitova is the first player from the Czech Republic to earn the world champion title from the ITF since 1990 when countrymen Ivan Lendl was awarded the honor.
Right-handed Djokovic dominated competition in the 2011 season, compiling a 70-6 record. The 24-year-old Serb won three of four Grand Slams (all but the French Open) along with 10 ATP titles. Djokovic won 41 straight matches from the start of the Australian Open in January to the semifinals of the French Open in June.
ITF president Francesco Ricci Bitti said in an e-mailed statement: "Novak's achievements this year are remarkable in such a strong era for men's tennis, while Petra has made a major breakthrough on the women's tour."
