Goran Ivanisevic Too Expensive For Croatian Davis Cup Team

Coratia’s tennis federation is in search of a new captain for the country’s Davis Cup team.

One of the names at the top of their list was Goran Ivanisevic -- until they found out how much it would cost to get him.

Ivanisevic was in search of $130,600 for a one-year contract. The contract “despite his authority and professionalism” held too large of a price tag for the federation.

Croatia’s tennis officials was in search of a new captain after former captain Goran Prpic unexpectedly resigned last month. He also resigned as the Fed Cup team captain.

Ivanisevic is the 2001 Wimbledon Champion. He won the tournament as a wildcard, the only singles player to ever do so. The former World No. 2 retired in 2004. The 40-year-old Croatian is also know for the strength behind his serve, but it wasn’t enough to make him captain of his country’s Davis Cup team.

However, Ivanisevic will be the captain when Croatia plays Japan in a first-round Davis Cup series on Feb. 10 to Feb. 12, 2012. His appearance will be a one-time, unpaid basis.

Croatia’s tennis federation just placed a new captain for the women’s team on Friday, former French Open champ Iva Majoli.
