In tennis, the Grand Slam tournaments don’t just mean big trophies. They also means big money. The four major tournaments, directed by the International Tennis Federation, offer seven-figure prizes to the winners of the men’s and women’s bracket.

On the ATP and WTA circuits, no such tournament offered that kind of prize money - until Tuesday.

The BNP Paribas Open, held in Southern California from March 5-18, is the first combined men’s and women’s tour event to offer both the ATP and WTA singles champions a $1-million prize.

The tournament raised it’s prize money in hopes to continue their large draw of top-named professional athletes, along with trying to become the largest WTA and ATP World Tour Event. In 2012, the BNP Paribas Open will award more than $11 million in total prize money.

From the BNP Paribas Open:

"The BNP Paribas Open has been raising the bar for the sport over the course of the past four decades, and today's $1 million winners' prize money announcement represents yet another historic milestone," said Stacey Allaster, WTA Chairman and CEO. "The BNP Paribas Open is one of the cornerstone events in professional tennis exactly because of this attention to players and willingness to innovate and push the boundaries of success."
