Just a day after Spaniards Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer announced they would not be defending their Davis Cup title next season, Roger Federer committed to playing for Switzerland’s Davis Cup team.
Roger Federer To Play For Switzerland’s Davis Cup Team
The Swiss team will face the U.S. team in the first round of the 2012 Davis Cup from Feb. 10-12 in Fribourg, Switzerland. Federer, a 16-time Grand Slam winner and the current world No. 3, hasn’t played a first-round Cup match since 2004. His thoughts for playing in for Switzerland’s 2012 Davis Cup team began when The Fed traveled to Australia to help his countrymen win a playoff in September.
Unlike Nadal, Federer plans to still compete in the Davis Cup team while also preparing for the 2012 London Olympics next year.

He said last month he helped to choose the clay court surface for the match against the U.S., believing it would play to the Swiss team’s strengths and American weaknesses.
