Serena Williams On Her Blood Clot, Comeback And Life-Saving Surgery

Close to 12 months have passed since Serena Williams laced up her sneakers and gripped her racket for a competitive tennis match. Tuesday, Wiliams will play Tsvetana Pironkova on the grass courts at the Aegon International in the U.K. Her last match on the WTA tour was her victory in the Wimbledon finals against Vera Zvonareva.

Then Williams severely cut her foot on a broken piece of glass, which lead to two operations, and then had surgery for a blood clot in her stomach. On Monday, Williams told stories of the removal of her blood clot.

Here are her stories, and here’s more on her blood clot:

‘I was in a cast for 20 weeks. I’d rather have been in jail for 20 weeks because I really hated that cast. Having your foot in one position so long, not moving it, not being able to walk or do a lot of things caused a lot of the problems.

‘I’m just excited to be here and playing. I hope tennis has missed Venus and me.

‘If tennis has missed us half as much as we’ve missed tennis, we’re in a good place. This is a comeback that’s totally different from any other comeback.’
