Soderling was struggling with stomach problems throughout the match, especially early. The Swede won only seven points in the first set, and was visited by the doctor several times in the match. With stomach problems also plaguing several other players during the tournament, Miguel Seabra of Eurosport is reporting that the root cause is bad pasta in the players’ restaurant.
Tomic has been a thorn in the side in the of Tennis Australia for years, but all the crap they dealt with (especially with his father) seems to be paying dividends already.
Tomic has leapfrogged Lleyton Hewitt to become the highest ranked Australian man in tennis and is perhaps now the country’s greatest hope for a grand slam singles title on either side given Samantha Stosur’s recent struggles.
Tomic next places Xavier Malisse, who upset No. 11 Jurgen Melzer 7-5, 6-3, 6-0. Malisse made the semifinals of Wimbledon back in 2002, but Tomic should have a decided advantage in this one, setting up an awesome potential quarterfinal meeting with Novak Djokovic.
