Wimbledon Men’s Semifinals: Rafa Nadal Eliminates Andy Murray, Breaks Great Britain’s Heart

With Great Britain hoping to finally end their collective 75-year Wimbledon drought, Andy Murray once again came up just a little short. The Scottish 24-year-old crashed out of the Wimbledon semifinals for the third straight year, falling to Rafael Nadal 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 on Friday. Nadal will now play Novak Djokovic -- who guaranteed his No. 1 ranking with his semifinal win -- in Sunday’s championship.

Murray looked poised avenge last year’s semifinal defeat to Nadal after winning the first set. But Nadal stormed back in the second, at one point winning seven straight games to take control of the match.

Nadal played a nearly error free match, logging just seven unforced errors to Murray’s 39 and double-faulting just once. He also converted 5 of 8 break-point chances and only faced four break points on his serve.

Nadal will now have a chance to play for his third Wimbledon championship and his 11th Grand Slam title, which would move him into a tie for fourth all-time. As it currently stands, his 10 titles are tied with Bill Tilden for sixth all time.
